Indian opener Mayank Agarwal was involved in a dramatic run-out at the start of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Bangalore this Saturday (March 12).

Agarwal was seen trying to go for a hopeless run along with his partner Rohit Sharma and was soon declared out short of his crease even as Sri Lankan players went for DRS off an LBW call and the delivery was confirmed as a no-ball as well.

Sri Lanka curiously opted for the review while the two Indians messed up an attempted run and the striker had to make the long walk back to the pavillion.

The review asked by Sri Lanka’s wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella was for the close shout on the LBW front after a delivery from Vishwa Fernando hit Mayank Agarwal in front of the stumps in line with the knee role from the ‘over-the-wicket’ angle for the left-arm seamer.

But that review was skipped  because of the no-ball as the two umpires made sure the fielding team got their deserved breakthrough following a run-out.

Mayank Agarwal was involved in a curious run-out in Bangalore Test against Sri Lanka.

Mayank Agarwal involved in an interesting run-out to throw light on rule book

As per the existing DRS regulations adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the action held after the review is considered blurred and is not counted. A debatable law that robs batting teams important runs in case the review goes their way, in Mayank Agarwal’s case, it came back to haunt him.

If the action after the review was not considered dead, the run-out against the batter wouldn’t have stood, even as the longstanding rule allows for a player to be run-out in cases of no-balls.

Unless Agarwal was out LBW in such a scenario – the ball from Fernando seemed to be pitching down the leg – he would’ve been saved and continued his innings.

But the two umpires didn’t let the rules come in the way of a straightforward result, as they overruled Sri Lanka’s review and went for one themselves to check the run-out, enabling Agarwal’s dismissal.

Mayank Agarwal would’ve felt dejected upon his dismissal as he missed out on a Day 1 surface on an Indian pitch. In home conditions, the batter averages close to 80 after his 8 Test matches. He missed out in the previous Test as well in Mohali, scoring 33 off 49 deliveries.
