West Indies’ brilliance in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 resumed on Saturday with Hayley Matthews taking an outrageous catch in the slip cordon in India’s first innings.
Having opted to bat first after winning the toss, India got off to a flier thanks to Yastika Bhatia’s 21-ball 31, studded with six fours. It was the second-quickest knock by an Indian opener (min 20 balls faced) and the start gave India’s innings a rousing start.
While she was dismissed soon, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj combined before Hayley Matthews made her impact in the match. She first sent back Mithali, caught at cover with an off-break that took the leading edge of her bat.
The pressure of Mithali’s dismissal slowed down the rate and Deepti Sharma was under pressure from the word go. Some of that released in the 13th over from Shakera Selman where she found two boundaries.
But things quickly took a turn when Anisa Mohammed induced an outside edge off an attempted sweep from Deepti. The edge flew to the slip cordon even as Deepti was completing her sweep shot to the leg side.
Having to react quickly with the ball going in the wrong direction, Hayley Matthews stuck her right hand out and pulled off a breathtaking catch to get rid of Deepti and give West Indies their third wicket in the match.

West Indies had a stunning start to the World Cup campaign, registering wins over New Zealand and England in their first two games to put a strong foot forward to a semi-final spot.
India, on the other hand, won against Pakistan but suffered a big loss against New Zealand in their second game in the Women’s World Cup 2022.
The big guns have stepped up for West Indies with Hayley Matthews smashing a hundred in the tournament opener and Deandra Dottin stepping up with bat, ball, and in the field.
