The ICC Women’s World Cup 2022 is finally here. After it got postponed from 2021 to 2022, the mega eight-team event is all set to get underway on the 4th of March in New Zealand. Hosts New Zealand Women face West Indies Women at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui to kickstart proceedings.
The Mithali Raj-led Indian Women’s side play their first game of the tournament on the 6th of March and it is against arch-rivals Pakistan Women. The Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui will be the venue for the big clash. It is a day-night encounter and overall, the fourth of the tournament.
However, there has been a significant outrage among the fans for the lack of coverage, excitement and build-up around the showpiece event of Women’s cricket. The official broadcaster for ICC events in India, Star Sports barely had a promo or a video building up to the World Cup. Even when there were a handful of days to go for the tournament to start, there was absolutely no build-up. Star Sports uploaded a small 10-second video on the 25th of February which just had information about the game between India Women and Pakistan Women on the 6th of March.
Here are some of the tweets, lashing out at Star Sports:
Don’t make them at all, if you want to make them such. What’s the point? This market needs a disruptor for everyone to compete. https://t.co/dkXvfdTQcL

Cringe promos for bilateral series in Men’s Cricket.
Substandard work which shows clear lack of interest for Women’s Cricket match in World Cup.
Star Sports continues to embarrass itself some way or the other. https://t.co/Vg0xyKywWc

If this is the best you can do to promote ICC Women’s World Cup after you made us suffer through those awful Mauka Mauka ads, then maybe you shouldn’t have the rights to the tournament https://t.co/wb05L3dVsS

All the resources in the world and this is the best you can come up with? A lil hype wouldn’t hurt 🥲 https://t.co/2WYis97HhI

After facing severe backlash, Stars Sports finally released a decent promo for the Women’s World Cup and captioned it, “1 squad, 1 mission & a billion dreams – united by #HamaraBlueBandhan, a special bond between #WomenInBlue & the fans! Are you ready to join us & cheer for #TeamIndia in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022?”
India Women fell agonisingly short of winning the 2017 Women’s World Cup and Star Sports based their promo around that. The voice in the video said that India’s World Cup dream fell one step short but it gave India Women some new heroes and gave them belief. The fans were pretty happy that their voice was heard.
