Day 4 of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide was a painful one for Joe Root in every sense of the word. Having seen his team pushed to the brink of another defeat by arch-rivals Australia, the England captain was funnily hit on his unmentionables by a Mitchell Starc delivery near the close of play.

In the dying moments of the penultimate day, Root was left to bear excessive pain when Starc hit him where it hurts the most. Hilariously, however, he still called a two with his partner Ben Stokes and the usually elegant batter was seen making an extremely funny attempt to get back to his mark.

Joe Root was batting on 22 at the time as he flicked Starc through the on-side and asked Stokes to get across for two runs, only for him to amusingly hop and limp through the 22 yards.

Unlucky Joe Root left to battle extra pain in the unmentionables

The build-up to the funny incident is perhaps funnier than the actual act. Joe Root got hit on the box by a skiddy ball from Starc during the third session of play and immediately crashed down on the surface in unbearable pain.

This was a double blow to Root, who was earlier also hit in the abdomen during a net session and couldn’t take the field for the start of the day. The England skipper stayed away from action, being checked by the hosts’ medical team as Australia piled on their third-innings lead.

Root, thankfully, recovered to take the field thereafter. But just when the England skipper would’ve hoped that he has had his share of mishaps for the day, he received another blow to the box and this time at Starc’s disarming speed.

The batter was immediately attended by the medical staff, who treated him and allowed him to resume his innings. However, what followed made it clear that Root is still not quite ready to sprint on the pitch. While obviously the batter wouldn’t have found anything funny about it, the fans and the commentators couldn’t control their laughter.

Here is a clip of Channel 7 commentators laughing on Joe Root’s attempted two:

Root has been by far England’s best batter for the tour so far. He made a fighting 89 in the second innings of the Brisbane Test and followed that up with another fine half-century in the first innings in Adelaide.
