Mixed reactions were seen among fans as news came to light that Virat Kohli is India’s highest-ranked Test batter after the latest update to the ICC table for the format. As per the development, Kohli is placed at fifth in the overall standings as the solitary Indian in the top 5 ranked Test batters.
Kohli holds 763 rating points with him after playing a fighting knock of 45 in the first-innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka, also his 100th Test match for India, played in Mohali. The modern-day great played a part in India’s comprehensive innings victory by stitching a critical third-wicket stand of 90 runs with Hanuma Vihari on Day 1.
The 33-year-old will head into the second Test of the series in Bangalore as India’s highest-ranked Test match batter to date. Above Virat Kohli, in ascending order are fourth-placed Kane Williamson (844 rating points), Steve Smith (851), Joe Root (872) and top-positioned Marnus Labuschagne (936).

Virat Kohli has now played 100 Test matches for India.
Virat Kohli made a two-spot jump in the Test rankings for batters after his solitary innings in Mohali Test. The batter is two rating points above his India captaincy successor Rohit Sharma, who is positioned sixth.
Kohli’s jump without making a more significant score or breaking his longstanding century drought and Rohit’s presence below him led to mixed emotions among fans, who gave various kinds of reactions to the latest rankings update.
While some said the Test rankings model is flawed since Kohli made a leap without a substantial individual score, some flexed their muscles saying even as the batter has not scored a hundred in last two years, he stays ahead of a lot of batters in the rankings.
Rohit’s presence below Kohli also retriggered the comparisons between the two great batters.
Here is how some of the fans reacted:

The next Test versus Sri Lanka will be a D/N pink-ball affair played from Saturday (March 12) in Virat Kohli’s home away from home, the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The ground has seen Kohli produce some of his best international knocks for India. It is also the base of his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
