Ross Taylor, the experienced New Zealand batsman, will be missing the first ODI against Bangladesh because of an injury. New Zealand have included all-rounder Mark Chapman in their squad as cover for Taylor.

Taylor picked up “a small tear in his left hamstring” while fielding in a Plunket Shield match between Central Stags and Wellington Firebirds on Sunday (March 14).

The Kiwi batting stalwart will be joining the national squad on Wednesday (March 17) and stay with the team while he undergoes treatment for his injury. The team management will keep a track of Taylor’s injury progress.

Ross Taylor is ruled out of the Bangladesh ODI series opener.

New Zealand hopeful Ross Taylor will be available for 2nd and 3rd ODIs

Gary Stead, the New Zealand head coach, said he is hoping for the hosts to have Ross Taylor available for the second and third ODIs of the Bangladesh series.

“It’s a shame for Ross to have this happen on the eve of a series,” Stead said. “It’s a small tear and we’re hopeful after some rest and rehabilitation we can get him fit for the second game in Christchurch.”

“It’s an exciting time for Mark who’s come in and performed well recently for the T20 side, so we have full confidence he can do the job if called upon.”

Taylor, 37, has played 232 ODIs for New Zealand and scored 8,574 runs at an average of 48.44 with 21 hundreds to his name.

Dunedin’s University Oval will host the ODI series opener against Bangladesh on Saturday (March 20), followed by matches on Tuesday (March 23) and Friday (March 26) at Hagley Oval in Christchurch and the Basin Reserve in Wellington, respectively.

The ODI series will kick-off New Zealand’s ICC Super League campaign.
