As expected, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green attracted a massive bidding war in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026 auction). Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) showed their interest in the Aussie right from start, wavering off a tussle from Rajasthan Royals (RR) till INR 13.4 crore before Chennai Super Kings (CSK) joined in and took the price above INR 20 crores. However, it was KKR who had the last laugh, securing Green at a staggering price for INR 25.20 crores, which makes him the most expensive overseas player and the third-highest overall in IPL history.
Interestingly, despite the towering price, there is a certain limit on the fee which can be acquired by an overseas player in relation to a couple of aspects from the previous season, implying Green won’t get the entire 25.20 crores.
The management committee of the IPL 2026 auction have put these guidelines into place to ensure that the acquisition costs for overseas players do not skyrocket. The ‘maximum fee’ rule was introduced last year to curb overseas players from taking advantage of mini auctions.

Out of the above-mentioned points, whichever is lower becomes the cap for an overseas player in the mini-auction for the upcoming season. The administrators have set these guidelines to prevent the prices from surging in terms of the costs for the overseas players.
Rishabh Pant was the player who received the top auction price in the last mega-auction, which was INR 27 crore. That being said, the player who was retained for INR 18 crore would take precedence in terms of the value. Since the lower of the two amounts would be INR 18 Crore, the price cap for Cameron Green in the IPL 2026 mini-auction would be the same. The extra amount will go to BCCI for developmental purposes.
