Eyeing a semi-final spot, Australia will be facing Bangladesh in their penultimate Super 12 Group 1 fixture of the T20 World Cup 2021 on Thursday (November 4) in Dubai.
The Aussies will be looking for a strong comeback against the Bangla Tigers after going down heavily to England in their previous match. Having previously won over South Africa and Sri Lanka, a victory here will keep the Aussies intact in the race for the knock-outs.
But a defeat against Bangladesh will put them in a precarious situation where they’ll have to then win their final Super 12 game against West Indies by a huge margin and end with a better NRR than South Africa.
Bangladesh themselves are already out of the tournament with four successive losses in the Super 12s but this is another opportunity for them to prove that they aren’t easy pushovers.

Pitch Report: Batting first has proven to be a disadvantage in Dubai, and this T20 World Cup in general. Teams batting first have had to contend with a two-paced dry surface in the afternoon in Dubai, but those chasing have enjoyed the better of the conditions at the venue because of the ease of approach knowing the exact asking rate and the dew falling in the night. This one being an afternoon game, the dew won’t be a problem but batting second still gives a team a massive edge.
The Australians are massive favourites for the AUS vs BAN game.
Australia are overwhelming favourites for this game. Even though Bangladesh will have happy memories of defeating them 4-1 at home in September, they start this game as second runners considering their own form and that the Aussies are now at full strength. In terms of conditions as well, Dubai is a significantly truer surface than the one in Dhaka and that further tilts the scales in Australia’s favour, as they can target the opposition with their fantastic pace attack.
1. Glenn Maxwell (10 credits)
Despite an indifferent run in the T20 World Cup so far, Glenn Maxwell remains an attractive and potentially rewarding captaincy pick. The aggressive right-hander has only had a dip in his returns in the last three matches but has not lost the great form that he carried into the tournament. Maxwell made 513 runs at an average of 42.75 and strike-rate of 144.10 in what was a low-scoring IPL 2021. He is also a handy off-spinner for Australia to put to use.
2. Aaron Finch (9.5 credits)
Finch, the Aussie captain, was his team’s lone ranger with the bat in the last game against England. The opening batter scored a fighting 44 to give his team at least something to bowl at after a horrible start at the other end. Finch is in reasonably good form after coming back from an injury absence and could reap rewards as a captaincy pick against a struggling Bangladesh side.
3. Adam Zampa (8.5 credits)
Zampa had an off game against England, going for 1/37 off his 3 overs bowling to a rampaging Jos Buttler. But the wristspinner is undoubtedly in good form and rhythm. In his previous two outings of the Super 12s, Zampa had figures of 2/12 and 2/21. Zampa is a good option for captaincy keeping in mind also the fact that Bangladesh have generally struggled to wristspin and fast wristspin in particular.
1. Jos Hazlewood (8.5 credits)
Hazlewood has been very good with the ball since entering UAE for the second half of IPL 2021. With his high-arm release and pace, the speedster has enjoyed bowling on dry, uneven tracks. He has maintained an economy rate of only 6.30 over three matches of the T20 World Cup so far.
2. Pat Cummins (8.5 credits)
Cummins will be another of the Aussie quicks licking their lips ahead of the Bangladesh encounter considering oppositions’ struggles in the last match against the pace and movement that Rabada and Nortje generated. Cummins has been slightly expensive in the tournament so far – ER 7.22 for 3 wickets – but against this opposition, he could be another fruitful budget pick.
3. Ashton Agar (8.5 credits)
Agar, the left-arm spinner, was the only Australian bowler who looked in some sort of control during the game against England. His 2.4 overs went for just 15 runs. He also picked up a wicket. With his ability to plug away at the batters and keep them quiet, Agar becomes a crucial cog in Aussies’ bowling attack.
