England will be taking on Sri Lanka in the two teams’ next T20 World Cup 2021 encounter on Monday (November 1) in Sharjah.
The English side will be entering the fixture in terrific form, having won their previous Super 12 Group 1 matches against West Indies, Bangladesh and Australia.
For the Lankan Lions, however, it will be a virtual knock-out after following their win over Bangladesh with losses in the last two games versus Australia and South Africa.
England are sitting comfortably on top of the Group 1 standings but Sri Lanka are placed fourth. A win for the English will secure their semi-final berth, while a defeat for Sri Lanka will end their title hopes.
England – Jason Roy, Jos Buttler (wk), Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan (c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tymal Mills
Sri Lanka – Kusal Perera (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Lahiru Kumara

Pitch Report: Sharjah has seen multiple close encounters now in this T20 World Cup because of its dry, spin-friendly nature. West Indies successfully defended their 142 versus Bangladesh, while Sri Lanka’s last game saw South Africa reach the 143-run target with only one ball to spare. Expect another such deck where it will be difficult to hit the pacers also, provided they don’t overpitch the ball.
England’s chance to secure the semi-final berth in the ENG vs SL Super 12 game.
While England have been dominating since the start of the Super 12s, Sri Lanka have played unconvincingly in their last three matches. For Lankan Lions, the problem is their inexperienced batting unit and pace attack which the Proteas exposed to keep their chase going and eventually won. If England also can keep the damage to limited proportion against Sri Lanka’s spinners, they can exploit their oppositions’ weaker suits – the pace attack and inept batting depth. England are massive favourites for this one.
1. Jos Buttler (10.5 credits)
After two indifferent outings, Jos Buttler was back in his element in the last game against Australia. The aggressive opening batter struck a magnificent 71 not out off just 32 balls, including 5 fours and 5 sixes. Buttler’s blistering knock reiterated why he is always a strong captaincy pick.
2. Wanindu Hasaranga (10 credits)
Hasaranga, the young Sri Lankan mystery spinner, has been in terrific form with the ball. The youngster is his team’s highest wicket-taker of the T20 World Cup 2021 with 11 scalps from six outings and also their most economical bowler, going at only 5.27 runs per over. Hasaranga took a hat-trick in the last match versus South Africa.
3. Chris Woakes (9 credits)
Woakes has been so impactful to England’s cause with his new-ball exploits. In the last three matches, Woakes has given England fantastic starts in the powerplay and dented the opposition’s chances right at the beginning of their innings. His tally for the tournament now features 4 scalps with an economy rate of just 4.70.
1. Dushmantha Chameera (8.5 credits)
The only time Chameera has faltered is at the death. Otherwise, the young talented quick has shown decent control and consistency. He has taken 5 wickets in the tournament so far while conceding a respectable 7.45 runs per over.
2. Liam Livingstone (8.5 credits)
If not with the bat, Livingstone has found a way to contribute with the ball for England. The part-time leg-spinner has shown his capabilities with the secondary skill in the last two games, giving away only 4.28 runs per over with 3 scalps. In the last game against Australia, Livingstone bagged figures of 1/15 off his 4 overs.
3. Pathum Nissanka (8.5 credits)
Nissanka was Sri Lanka’s lone ranger with the bat in the defeat against South Africa. The opening batter struck 72 off 58 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes. In a disappointing scorecard, only one other Lankan batter made it past the 20-run mark. Nissanka has been in decent enough form in the T20 World Cup so far to be a rewarding budget pick.
