Is Virat Kohli returning as RCB captain in IPL 2022?

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are all set to announce their captain for the 2022 season on March 12th in a huge event planned and shared on their social channels. Virat Kohli, their captain across eight seasons had stepped down from the role after last season, when he chose to give up the T20I captaincy as well.

“I spoke to the management this evening, it was something that was in my mind for a while,” Kohli had put out a video at the time to make his announcement. “This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me.”

Royal Challengers Bangalore have three captaincy options for the season with Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik acquired in the auction and Glenn Maxwell an existing team member who was retained and capable of leading the team. While the widely expected announcement on 12th, the #RCBUnbox event, is Faf du Plessis, a proven captain, leading the team, the few teasers from the RCB camp on their social handles for the event on 12th and need reports in a few places suggests otherwise.

Dropping a social media post with the caption ‘The leader of our pride will be ..’, RCB released a short teaser where glimpses of the new captain can be seen.

While fans continued to speculate if it was Faf du Plessis, Dinesh Karthik or Glenn Maxwell, a few suggested it could actually be Virat Kohli returning to lead the RCB side with the visuals suggesting it isn’t a stretch to think it is that of Kohli from last season.

The bigger hint, though, comes from another Twitter user who cited similarities between the RCB graphics post across channels when announcing the event on 12th and Virat Kohli’s exisiting images that are available everywhere.

As can be seen, the graphics seem to have been made from Virat Kohli’s posters and images.

Dainik Jagran also reported that RCB hasn’t officially yet accepted Virat Kohli’s resignation from the post.

Former head coach Daniel Vettori recently rubbished speculations that Virat Kohli would return as captain for RCB.

No [Virat Kohli will not be the RCB captain again]. I think it is as simple as that. I don’t think that ever works, let alone in franchise cricket or international cricket. Once the captain is moved on, the right thing is for him to move on,” Vettori told ESPNCricinfo.

But these recent teasers have promoted the idea that Kohli could indeed make a comeback as captain of the side. One major factor suggested by Kohli about stepping down from the role is workload. Now with him offloading the Test captaincy as well, Kohli might just actually have an year in him as captain to help with the transition process to whoever RCB finds fit to lead the team.
