‘I want to bat all 10 overs’ – Schoolmate shares story on MS Dhoni hitting five sixes and single in local 10-over tournament

Before he mesmerised the cricketing world with his brute powerhitting skills that almost made the yorker extinct for a while, MS Dhoni was hammering the bowling to all parts in local cricket in Jharkhand and taking his first leap towards the game.

The legendary former India skipper gave the earliest example of his amazing six-hitting ability in these local club matches, where his friends first spot the raw talent that later went on to put the city of Ranchi on the cricketing map with his remarkable achievements for India.

During one such game, the unique nature of MS Dhoni came to light as he decided to bat the entire 10 overs on his own, hitting a flurry of sixes and taking singles off each of the final balls to retain strike.

A teammate from Dhoni’s school team in Ranchi revealed the story on Reddit how the right-hander smashed one of the bowlers for five consecutive sixes and when everyone was certain that he would hit one more maximum in the over, the young gun would rotate strike deliberately.

School mate reveals MS Dhoni’s early six-hitting talent, love for bikes

When the teenage MS Dhoni would be later asked to explain why he didn’t go for another six off the last ball, he would amusingly respond, why shouldn’t he take a single and try to bat 10 overs when he was made to field for all 10 overs as well?

“There was a famous bowler in our locality named Santosh who used to bowl with left hand…And was touted as Akram of Ranchi.. Mahi once hit him for 5 sixes of first 5 deliveries in an over..Everyone including the bowler was sure that sixth will go for six too but Mahi then took single off last delivery,” the teammate posted on Reddit.

“After the game , Mahi told everyone that ‘dus over fielding kiye hai, pura dus over batting karenge, non strike pe kaahe jaaye’. T:- I have fielded for 10 overs, I will also bat 10 overs now. Why should I go to non strike?”

This teammate also shared a story that once again highlighted the champion cricketer’s love for bikes from an early age. Dhoni once took part in a cricket competition based in Jamshedpur only because the tournament organisers had announced that the ‘Player of the Series’ holder will get his favourite RX 100 bike.

Played in 1998, this tournament also gave wings to MS Dhoni’s cricketing ambitions and he started working harder on his game thereafter.

“There was a tournament scheduled in Jamshedpur ( tata as we call it) and organisers have announced that winner of MOS will get a RX 100 bike. Mahi always wanted that bike but he couldn’t afford it by himself, so he went to play in that tournament for bike and ended up winning it.”

“This gave him hope that he can make a career out in cricket also. And there was no looking back for him since then,” the teammate posted.

MS Dhoni retired from the game in August 2020 as India’s finest wicketkeeper-batter and most successful captain, winning all three major ICC trophies.
