Every time Washington Sundar bats for India, it is the solidity and the languid nature of his batting that stands out. The technically correct allround cricketer from Tamil Nadu plays in straight lines and looks extremely elegant at the crease.

An example of the same was on display during the second ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 5), where Washington Sundar earned a promotion up the order and was sent to try and resurrect the innings after the untimely departure of KL Rahul.

Batting No.6, the young gun produced a steady knock of 24 off 41 deliveries on a challenging surface where all of the West Indies seamers got the ball to jump up alarmingly with pace and generated a reasonable amount of lateral movement.

Washington Sundar’s lovely straight drive leaves fans awestruck

Off his very first ball in the middle, Washington Sundar left a telling example of his class and elegance, which has been evident throughout his young career so far.

The batter played an absolutely perfect straight drive facing the bowling of West Indies’ experienced fast-bowler Kemar Roach.

As Roach overpitched a delivery angled into the left-hander from around-the-wicket angle, Sundar displayed a straight bat and timed the beautifully past the bowler. The ball raced away to the fence.

The shot came off the fifth ball of the 30th over in the Indian innings, which stuttered along for the major part of the first half to reach a competitive but less than ideal score of 237/9 in their 50 overs.

This was the first instance that Washington Sundar batted in an ODI for India after making his comeback to the 50-over unit in over four years with the previous one-dayer.

In that match, Sundar came to the party as a bowler. With his skiddy off-spin bowling, he picked up an impressive haul of 3 for 30 off his 9 overs in India’s comprehensive six-wicket victory.
